a. SQUIRE is a contemporary art gallery in London. As sole designer and developer, I shaped the website from information architecture and visual design through development and handover. The site brings the gallery’s current program and exhibition archive into a shared structure, with room to accommodate new exhibitions, documents, and artworks.
An unlikely brief
The owner imagined “a gallery that existed in the ’60s and closed in the ’80s.” Through conversations and design explorations, I translated that imagined history into a letterhead-inspired layout, spare typography, and a straightforward exhibition index.
The centered masthead, fine dividing lines, and compact contact details give the site the character of gallery correspondence. This establishes a distinctive presence while leaving space for the changing program.
Reading and looking side by side
Exhibition pages place press releases beside installation views and individual works. The two columns scroll independently, allowing visitors to keep a passage in view while exploring the images, or return to the writing without losing their place.
A draggable divider lets visitors adjust the balance between reading and looking, giving either column more space.

A continuous view on mobile
On smaller screens, the split layout becomes a single scrolling sequence. Exhibition text, installation views, and individual works share the same column, with captions kept alongside the images. The gallery’s typographic identity carries through while the layout adapts to reading and browsing on a phone.
